The term 'allergy' is derived from two Greek words which mean "altered reactivity". That is, an allergy is an adverse reaction to a normally harmless substance which may be a food or other environmental agent such as dusts, pollens or chemicals.

APC UPS Shenanigans   Print
Written by Aaron Brigatti
Saturday, 16 October 2004

Well another UPS replacement, another problem!

This time, well my motherboard has blown (well the capacitors anyway!).  I was doing some programming work, and then boom, the computer switched off.  I’ve tested a few things and it then came down to 1) power supply unit or 2) motherboard.  Replaced the power unit – no joy!  I then got a mate who was able to test the motherboard and other bits and bobs (memory and hard disk mainly) - bobs your uncle it turned out to be the mother board.

Now, there seems to be a common occurrence with my UPS devices (all APC!) – they don’t seem to work all the time.  When I lived in a village, I suffered numerous spikes or outages, so the APC UPS device was a saving grace.  Now, the bigger the computer HDD and reliance, the bigger the issues/risks when something goes wrong with it – so the reliance on a steady level of power is essential!  I up-ed my previous UPS model from the Back-UPS 500 range to Smart-UPS 700 range (more power from the unit!).

This was a BIG mistake.  The first problem in March 2004, we suffered a power outage, but instead of keeping my machine operational to allow me to power down safely, the computer switched off (i.e. what you would expect if you didn’t have UPS unit!)  This time, well I dunno, it seems like that a power spike has occurred – two avenues left 1) ADSL router (not likely!) or 2) APC UPS device (again!).

Ummmm now you can see why I am annoyed!
