Well, after now 3 months into the new role, I am finding the role pretty tough going.  It's not really the work or team that is getting me down but the manner that the whole division operates within.  It's a very intensive working environment, very different from what I'm used too, and coming from a "technical" background - a totally diverse approach in how we go about things.

I like order and stability - but this doesn't seem to exist in the team.  Although there is a fairly sufficient leadership team (2 Directors and a VP), the mix (and my role) between Project Delivery (project management) and Service Delivery (partner operations support) is quite different and a very pressured role to say the least.

Having said that I welcome the challenge, and felt I should give myself time to adjust and also develop.  The work has certainly ramped up and by speaking with my work peers, this has been the case for a number of years - it's like a explosion in work.  The worst thing I find is that people are soooo busy, they don't even have time to chat etc.  Their eyes are simple down and concentrating.  Even when "chilled events" are organised (which is quite rare!) - they never seem to materise.  Every team meeting that I have attended so far, there was a mention of some sort of social activity - but alas nothing.   Maybe it's the work, the stress, life outside of the work (families/commitments etc) - or people simply don't want to mingle in this manner?  Who knows?  But it makes it a really tough environment, especially for me, to work in!

Looking forward, I don't think there is much progression within the actual team, unless I look outside the "bigger" GNS division?  Split mind really; GNS is a relatively new division so there is a lot of exec-focus - which is kinda good, but extremely stressful.  There is a lot of opportunities, but also a lot of drawbacks (being based in Brighton away from the main GNS groups is a big one! - Although being Operations-related, we have a closer link to Technologies than Marketing for example!).  Maybe a consideration to move back into Technologies?  But same thing, maybe it's the "Brighton" life that I need a break from - being mainly based in and around since such a young age?  I still feel that for networking and socialising, London is the place to be.  You can go down the pub and meet people (friends and foes) from neighbouring companies, but in Brighton - it's always the same crew - and usually something related to Amex too!

University?  Well this makes even more difficult - although a short-term "activity" - I keep saying this to myself to keep me going (I've since heard today of someone dropping the MSc's!!); it's that extra burden that is eating away from the inside - it ain't good.  But the good news is that there is only one report (5k words) and my thesis to type up (12k words!).  There IS light at the end of the tunnel!!

If all else fails, I can say I've got an MSc in ITEC, two years of exerience, including 1 yr as part of a grad development scheme and another year "actually" working as a permie!! :-)
