It all sounded good in principle, and I was hopeful that it would be straightforward 🙂 I finally managed to get around to purchase a local SingTel SIM card. I decided against getting a monthly contract, because I doubt I will use it that much whilst here in Singapore; I was really looking for a local number for people so people can reach me on a personal number when I am out and about in the City (and didn’t feel it was justified to use my Corporate Mobile).
All seemed fine, a pre-paid SIM card cost me SGD $15 (actually worth SGD $18 in call credit). I decided to use my existing iPhone 3GS which meant that I didn’t need to spend too much, I won’t need to worry about checking my personal mobile number (well I’ve recorded a voicemail to tell people that I won’t be checking the vocie mailbox, and to email instead).
But as if with anything out of ordinary, there is also ‘special’ task to consider – which I kinda predicted, the iPhone was locked to the O2 UK network, and would not allow me to use a SingTel or any other network SIM card in the handset.
So I’ve just emailed O2 UK Customer Services to see if they can give me the unlock code to allow me to use it for the SingTel SIM. They’ve done a similar thing for my Corporate Account, and hopefully they will be as effective for my personal account too 🙂 Well I can but hope!
Looking forward to receive this so that I can then use my iPhone to record my movements (foursquare, facebook et al) during my trip around the City – haha, I bet you loved hearing that!
