Well when I was leaving the dinner meal at Market Hall, I didn’t notice that my camera had caught on my chair, so when I got up, it tugged downwards, resulting in the camera slipping from my hand and bounching on the wooden floor.
I initally thought that I was lucky, as on first inspection there was no damage, but when I walked out, I turned the camera on, and bham, I noticed the problem. The LCD display under the top protective screen had smahed in one corner, resulting in streak lines across most of the display, and the display failed to function. Luckily the camera has a viewfinder, but I don’t know if something else has been messed up during the accidently bump.
I was kicking myself, and now had the dilemma of what to do next. But I was thinking clearly – and so decided to claim via my travel insurance. I phoned Amex Travel Insurance, and raised the claim.
There was then another moment when my heart almost missed a beat, when the rep told me that he needed to check whether my claim was ‘void‘ – because I was over the time period after leaving the UK. He checked with his supervisor and came back advising that I was within the timelines, but only just! I subsequently learnt that the policy advises that it only covers 120 days, of no longer than 42 days in duration away from the UK on a single trip – so I claimed on 4th August, which is 35 days after I have left the UK. I have to be extra careful because after 11th August, my cover is going to be greatly reduced 🙁
I don’t understand how to ensure I have suitable travel insurance or similar, when I am on a work’s assignment. It’s rather silly these policies, but I sense it is just the way the Insurance industry works. I appreciate that work can’t assist directly, but it’s a really bummer!
Well I know have to visit a Canon Servicing Centre to see if they can repair the camera, and if so, if they can do this within a value of an equivalent camera (they quoted the G11 of below £400, but I would be keen to get a G12 (approx £450)) 🙂 – if it exceeds this or they cannot repair it, then they will replace the item and the Travel Insurance will cover the full costs, so we’ll see what they say! I was now thinking of whether to keep the same camera model (Canon G-series) or change to another model, and pay the difference. I still think I would stick with a Canon, and I don’t feel I am ready yet for a full-blown SLR, but a bridge camera is still the way I want to go! Maybe I got with the Canon EOS series?
Anyway, good bye Canon G10 – it’s been great knowing you for 2 and a half years!
