Durian-Durian – Smelly Ol’ Things

Like a few things in life, Marmite, Peanut Butter …. and ergh Guinness (?)… you either love something or or hate it.  I personally love the latter, but can’t stand the former two!

So if the Durian is around – and boy you can smell it, you either are tempted to try it or give it a VERY WIDE berth!  Me?  Well I have been sitting on the fence.   I can’t stand the stink of the fruit (it’s really tough walking past without turning up one’s noise at it – literally!!) – but the taste is definitely an ‘acquired’ one, and you have to be in the right frame of mind.  I think it a mind over matter situation!

So during the trip to KL, we met up with my work colleague’s old acquaintance, and they took us out for lunch and then we decided to give the local Malaysian Durian a go.  In fact I was advised that the Malaysian Durian is the best in the world – better than Thai – and the fact that China want to import tonnes of the stuff, must mean that it is definitely sought after!

D24 Durian

We tried two types – to me, I found it difficult to gauge the different.  I guess I am not a Durian connoisseur .

The first one was called “D24” which used to be to the ‘top-brand’ of Durian.  Its a yellowish creamy colour, dry and bitter-sweet with a medium texture.  It’s okay, but it’s a very messy fruit!

Raja Kunyik Durian

The other one we tried called “Raja Kunyik” (or Cat Mountain King) which is meant to be the top breed of Durian available (at the moment).  Larger outer shell, golden-yellowish in colour, with a creamy, cheesy-buttery texture, mouth-full thick pulp with a little seed.  It is meant to be super-sweet and delicious.

I think I will research judgement on that latter description!  Haha!

Anyway, I’m game for “most things” (this isn’t the same as “everything” though), so ventured cautiously to try both Durian varieties with honour and respect to the fruit.  I’ve tried Durian a couple of times before, and I do have to admit, I’m not a big fan of it.  It’s different and definitely is an acquired taste.  I can eat it, but I wouldn’t force myself to like it 🙂

Here are the photos of the ‘event’:
