More Cycling – More Exercise

Over the past couple of months, I have been upping the ante with my cycling. I know I need to do more exercise, and to also help bulk up my muscle, so cycling is one way of achieving this.

I decided to go along East Coast Park (ECP) because it is easy to get a bike and away from the hustle and bustle of the City, and away from the busy Singapore roads. Going eastward, it remains a pleasant journey, as you reach the perimeter road of Changi Airport. I am committed to get to the top side of the Airport, but so far have only managed to get about 3/4 of the way, mainly due to running out of time – the biggest challenge is I have the energy and time to get to the north part of Changi Airport – to the beach and/or Changi Village, but then I have to find a way to get back again 🙂

We’ll see, one day I think I can make it (and back)!

Work Hard, Play Hard

Well as the motto goes, when one works hard, you play hard…or should that be play ‘harder’. So after a few weeks (well okay months) of hard graft, I am sure looking forward to a nice long weekend in Penang.

I have been wanting to pay a visit for ages, so decided to book it up a few weeks back, and managed to persuade a work colleague to spend the time with me. I am certainly looking forward to it…it reminds me a little bit of the Malacca Trip, as everyone says you basically eat, drink, walk and sleep for the whole trip…so as they say eat little but often, and I am sure going to try out that motto 🙂

I will be leaving on Friday, 6th September (evening flight) and I decided to take Monday off from work, so will be arriving back early evening on Monday, 9th September. Back to work on the Tuesday – I can’t wait … Haha!!

I will tell you more after the holiday, hopefully it will be a fun-packed trip :). And I do hope I manage to relax and chill a bit too…

Futsal Fun – and a Hat-Trick!

What does one do after spending the Saturday doing indoor rock-climbing, well you do a nice 2-hour session on a Sunday morning playing football (futsal).

It was actually a good round with about 10 people turning up, which made it less strenous than usual. I don’t know if it was due to being fitter than previously, but either way, I played pretty well for a change, and managed to score a great hat-trick during the session.

I wonder if this means I am improving my footie skills? Ha!

Indoor Rock Climbing (again) – What Fun!!

Another weekend, another session to chill and relax with chums. We decided to go for another indoor rock climbing episode, and I really enjoyed it the last time we went out.

This time, there was only a few of us, and I must admit I was shattered this time around, so I didn’t manage to attack many of the walls or routes this time, but I did 3 runs and reached the time each time, which was enjoyable.

I must get into a more regular routine, and maybe should sign up to a class – ‘cos it really is great fun 🙂

Singapore Smog and Haze – Dreadful

I had previously wondered why there was this burning smell and hazy feel about the place – for the past few weeks, but I didn’t think that much of it.  I knew that the summer heat and the Indonesian fires annually create a risk of haze floating across the Singaporean island, but this year it seemed to have been really bad.

At the beginning of June, the 24 hour PSI rating reached a range of 18-46 – which was healthy and relatively low – this was the normal rating that we would expect to see.  Since 13th June, the haziness and smog clouds started to come across and it got progressively worse each day until earlier last week when it went from “very unhealthy” (200+ PSI), to “hazardous” (300+), it even went past the magic 400 PSI market – which is “very hazardous” during a couple of occassions.  The previous worst smog reading was 226 PSI in 1997.

The worse thing is that we are helpless – we have to breathe, we have to go to work, we have to live – and unfortunately, we have succumbed to someone elses selfiness acts and performance.

Me and My N95 Mask

Me and My N95 Mask

In fact, it appears that all of the fires were manmade, including clearing forests and peat-land to create Palm Oil agricultural farmland.  The irony is that a number of the big customers and ‘land owners’ are from companies who have HQs in Singapore.  I guess, these are the ones to blame, but lets see what happens.

With all this talk about global warming, and environmental damage, I am amazed that our Indonesian friends are still have to get away with clearing land with this very poor and old agricultural technique!  It should be banned, they should be fined and they should be monitored to avoid it happening – it’s happening every year – so really makes me question, whether it is worth being in Singapore when my health is at risk!  Well I am stuck at the moment, so I just have to live and bear it…and hope it doesn’t cause long-lasting damage to my health!

Latest haze forecast are pictured here (live forecast – so will regularly update on this page).

Cycling Along East Coast Park

I haven’t been cycling for what feels like weeks (actually it probably is almost 2 months now!) so I knew this was going to be a good ride from the outset.

I met up a work colleague at 4pm at the local Burger King at ECP – we managed to stay clear from buying anything there though! – and we went to the bike hire company next door.  We went for the $8 per hour bike, and took up their $13 each for a 2 hour stint (they actually had an offer which was buy 2 hours get another hour fee – so it turned out to be $13 for 3 hours).  That’s pretty reasonable methinks.

We headed along eastward, and before long we arrived at the Food Court at ECP – we stopped off for a Sugar Cane and Chicken Wings break – which was delicious – and then we decided to head off further east.  After about an hour we had made it to the south-east edge – we then relaxed for a few minutes, before we headed north – towards the Changi perimter road – and we went on and on.  The good thing about this ride is that it is very flat, and the cycle lanes are nicely laid out, there is also less people as you move east, so it became a nice tranquil ride.  We reached about half-way up along the Changi Airport perimeter, and we then noted that we had to head back soon, as we had a house waming engagement at 7pm.  I think we could have easily continued – and another 10 minutes, we would have reached the top of Changi airport and then reach Changi Village.  I think we will eventually do that next time, because that would create another opportunity to relax and chill, before we head back to base.

It took us another 45 minutes and we finally reached back to the cycle hire shop near Burger King.

I think we did a 2 hr 30 minute ride (with 20 minutes worth of rest in-between) – a total of 25km round-trip.  Nice!  I worked out that if we went all the way to Changi village, it would be a 17km journey one-way, that’s a 34km round trip, so another 10km cycling – ouch!

A pleasureable visit to the Gardens by the Bay

Well to fully utilise my annual pass, I decided to pay a visit to the Gardens by the Bay last Sunday – the newly opened (since October 2012 – still new to me!) Botanic Gardens just opposite Marina Bay Sands.

It is a pleasant location, and I must admit the timing was absolutely perfect, as the temporary Tulip display was ending on 20th May – so if I didn’t do it, it would have been a sad mistake. It’s kinda visiting a little bit of the Netherlands in Singapore – Europe in Asia – haha!

I decided to visit both the Flower Dome (where the Tulip display was) and the Cloud Dome (where there was an indoor waterfall display). Both were delightful, and definitely worth a visit.

The captivating part was definitely the Cautus and Tulip display (in the Flower Dome) – which was a very simply but delightful display, and for the Tulips, it was the glorious colours that made the display.

I wasn’t that impressed with the Cloud Dome personally, but it was more of an education display about the pressures on our global water supply and how precious water really is (remember those days from school?) – haha…

Either way, a very enjoyable early after session – a nice way to walk off my Sunday Roast – hehe!

Exercise and Sports can be Dangerous – that’s Official :)

Well the Futsal game on Sunday, 12th May started like most others…a casual but sweaty game with some great chums.

It was definitely more relaxing having had more people turned up – because we have played when we have had 3 a side and 4 a side – and these are pretty tough, but when we had 5 and then 6 a side it was a lot better.

The challenge is when you are the one in goal, you’ve got more guys to look out for.  This happened to me, and I had the most scary moments I have experienced for a while – a ball being shot directly at my face, with my inability to stop it.  BANG!

I felt the pain, I knew it was a bad one, but I didn’t know how bad, until I saw a bit of blood on my hand – as I was wearing glasses, it turned out that the ball had pushed the glasses into my face.  I knew I was going to get some lingering issues, and it certainly turned out to be an issue…I got a nice shiner, which came up after a day or two.  Ouch!

Rock Climbing – That Was Fun!

Last time I was in Singapore, I was invited to experience indoor rock-climbing with a couple of work-friends; I couldn’t find the time last time, so decided to venture this time around.

We went to the Onsight Indoor Climbing Gym at 100 Guillemard Road – it was a nice experience, and I just about remembered what we had to do. I managed to climb up 3 walls with relative ease, but the next 2 were tougher to achieve. My arms and legs just were zapped of the energy required to push or pull me up so I managed to do half-way on both before I decided to have a break.

But it was great fun, and I would certainly repeat this. I just need to do some weights and push-ups/sit-ups, to improve my upper body muscles 🙂

Easter Weekend – Cycling Mad

Well I was aiming to spend some time away for the Easter Break, but didn’t manage to book anywhere, as the air fares were ridculouosly high, so instead I decided to spend it in Singapore.

I wanted to enjoy the time, so decided to spend some quality time with some friends doing cycling around East Coast, drinking and eating 🙂 (Well that seems to be a usual weekend, at the moment – haha).

It was actually quite enjoyable and relaxing…and I am certainly getting fitter with all of this exercis malarkey 🙂
