Mum Arrives for her Holiday

I have been looking at flights to the UK for Christmas for a few months, but they were ridiculously high (almost £1000+), so I decided to opt for a holiday closer to Singapore. Last year, I spent it in Hong Kong, and my mum suggested that we do the same. Whilst it is a good location, I didn’t want to pressure my cousin who we stay at, but we opted to go with this based on the short timelines we had to sort it out.

With work being manically busy (no really change there) I didn’t have that much time to arrange it, but we booked the flights (from Tiger Airlines) which cost around S$300 each (~£150), and we tried it find a way of enjoying the visit.

Maybe next year I will spend more time to book the holiday back to the UK (possibly when BA or Singapore Airlines have a sale on), but I think we will settle with a HK Christmas and NY break this time around. Maybe we can squeeze a trip to Macau, but let’s see what happens 🙂

Halloween and Glenn’s Birthday Party

Well it might have been a few days after Halloween (31st October), but a friend had arranged a dual Halloween and his Birthday party for 2nd November. And to mark such a occasion, it was a fancy dress one 🙂

I had been searching for a costume for a while – and didn’t really want to spend over the top, so after a few visits to a few places, I found one In Toa Payoh, it was called Number 1 Costume and was a huge place in one of the business units, but I just didn’t find one that I liked. I then decided to get a last minute purchase at another place in North Bridge Road, called Global Mascot – this place had a few costume sets all wrapped up, and I decided to get one of these. Only cost me S$50 as well, and yes I know – you get what you paid for. Last time I dressed as a Grim Reaper, so this year I brought one which was meant to have been a Vampire, but personally, it was quite poor, and the cloak didn’t have the proper attachments to hook onto my shoulders, so I ended with tape, which didn’t stay for long :(. Hey-ho, it was worth a shot!! Moral of the story, spend more effort to select a good costume, more time planning, and spend a bit more money to get a better quality and more complete costume!!

There is always next year … eek!!

More Holiday’s Planned

Well having come back from the wedding and my extended holiday in Langkawi, I knew I had to book some more holiday’s. I already have a self-made long weekend trip to Penang in early September so that’s a start.

I also am planning a trip to Boracay in Philippines with a few work colleagues and friends, and also looking to do another trip to Taiwan again. I also need to schedule a trip back to the UK to catch-up with my friends and family – and I think if I can work it out, I could do a part-holiday, part-work in the Brighton office, as one option to minimise the utilisation of my 2013 holiday leave. I then need to see what I want to do around Christmas – I was thinking of working towards the end, and do the odd day off, but maybe I could visit Hong Kong over Christmas again. We’ll see.

I better get cracking with the scheduling – as they say, work never finishes, so unless I get my finger out, none of the above will ‘happen’!!

Bank Bar and Bistro Tuesday Pub Quiz

Having missed out a couple of quiz nights over the past month, I decided to make the effort and turn up this time – I can’t say no to a fun night with a few friends, and to Guinness (shock horror).

I also made a special effort to ensure work didn’t get in the way which has happened to the previous sessions.

The Bank Pub Quiz is scheduled twice a month (every other Tuesday), and it was actually a good venue for it – being in close proximity of the office, but far enough to relax in a great setting.

We did pretty well – ended up in the middle of the table by the end of the night, and I actually did well answering some of the questions – and focused on one particular round (the tunes we want to pretend we don’t know) – well I was brought up in the 80’s and 90’s – haha!

I definitely will do it again soon…

Indoor Rock Climbing (again) – What Fun!!

Another weekend, another session to chill and relax with chums. We decided to go for another indoor rock climbing episode, and I really enjoyed it the last time we went out.

This time, there was only a few of us, and I must admit I was shattered this time around, so I didn’t manage to attack many of the walls or routes this time, but I did 3 runs and reached the time each time, which was enjoyable.

I must get into a more regular routine, and maybe should sign up to a class – ‘cos it really is great fun 🙂

Pure Art @ Keong Saik Exhibition – Cleo Lim

I was invited to visit a family friend’s private art exhibition at Jiak Chuan Road on Friday, 15th March, and I was delighted to pay a visit.

It was a delightful exhibition and it must have been good for the artist, Cleo Lim, to see all of her pieces of work in one exhibition, and I must admit some really got my attention. There were broadly two types of pieces, one on canvas and one on Japanese Rice Paper – and it was the latter that I really were my type of thing. It was the attention of detail and the true emotions that came through each piece.

I was even keen to get a piece – may still do so – it costs S$3,500 so it has to be something I really need to consider before I do so, especially, as I would need to find a way of getting it to the UK 🙂

Prior to the exhibition, as I turned up a bit early, I was given a tour of the Blu Connections marketing and logistics company – and company focused on ethical denim, it was fascinating and really made me think more about the clothes and denim I buy from the shops – very interesting background indeed – visit their website here –> Blu Connection.

Chinese New Year – Trip to Taiwan

Let me first start with saying Gong Xi Fa Cai or Gong Hey Fat Choy or 恭禧發財 or 恭禧发财 – in short, Happy Chinese New Year to one and all. I hope the Year of the Snake brings you years of joy, happiness, success and good fortune – I think we need quite a bit of all of this, based on the challenge environment we find outselves in.

This year, I was invited to spend time with a school friend and his wife in Southern Taiwan, so I duly accepted the invitation. I always wanted to visit him last time in 2011, but never managed to find the time to do so, so this time, I wanted to make more effort to visit them both.

This was also my first time flying Scoot, another low-cost carrier, and I must admit it’s not a bad airline. They are like the others in that ‘everything is extra’, but it was a comfortable trip.

As I was only there for 5 days, and due to the challenges to get a seat on the high-speed bullet train from Taipei to Kaohsiung, we decided that I should stay around Taipei for the first part of the day, and then head down on the 19.30 train. My mate, Sam, was kind enough to come up to meet me, as I was scheduled to arrive around 05:40, yup that’s right, with the flight duration of 4hrs 50mins, that meant my flight left 00.55 on Saturday morning – ouch! Anyway, I got some brekkie, found a cafe with free wi-fi, and just cruised until Sam arrived.

As it was Chinese New Year, most of Taipei was shut, but we walked around, chatted, stopped every so often to get a drink (to keep warm, cos it was ‘cool’ here (versus the 31°C of Singapore)). We head to Taipei-101 as we were intending to up and see a fantastic panoramic view of Taipei City, so we stopped off first at Sogo to get some food – at least we knew that this food court would be open – haha. When we arrived at Taipei-101, we entered the shopping mall on the ground floor, and it reminded me very much of Orchard Road in Singapore and the many high-end shops that exist…we breezed around and eventually went up to the fifth floor and joined the ticket line. After we got to the desk, the clerk advised us that it was quite foggy, so the view could not be guaranteed if we went up. Ahhhh…what a shame, but alas we decided to save our cash for another time to see the views. I will be back again at some point, anyway – hopefully over the summer months!! 🙂

We continued our walk around Taipei and then finally arrived at the main train station where we joined the high-speed train. It was very efficient, arriving and leaving on time, it was smooth, with VERY fast. We arrived in just over an hour, and Joy, Sam’s wife, was there to greet us both. It was a bit of a drive to where they live, as we had to go further South and around the coast tip to the South-East side. I felt very relaxed already. I was advised that most Taiwanese people would be down to the Southern parts, so I would expect it be quite busy. We had a relaxing few days, visiting some lovely scenic beaches and walks, a fantastic waterfall off the beaten track, and visited some great eating places, even visiting a night market in one of the nearby towns.

The highlight was to spend some quality time with some great friends, and also enjoy the company of their lovely dogs, Chino and Shao Bai – both were delightful, but I must admit, I had an affection to Shao Bai – she was sooo cute…hahaha!

I took the return train on Wednesday, 13th at 10.15, and arrived back in good time to pick-up my flight which was scheduled to leave at 15:45, and arrived back at 20:10 ready to go back to the office on Thursday – luckily it was just a 2-day week before the weekend – haha! 🙂

What a lovely island, a lovely Couple, their lovely dogs and a very relaxing and lovely break! It was also good to talk about some of the current challenges I am facing at the moment, so thanks to them for listening too 🙂

Chinese New Year – Taiwan

Well I heard from a school friend who is based on the south of Taiwan, and they invited me to spend Chinese New Year with them. What a treat that will be. I just need to book the flight and arrange the break with them – but I really hope it works out, as I would love to spend time with them both – some great friends! I never managed to visit them last time I was based in Singapore at the end of 2011, so I hope this time, it works out 🙂

Mum returns to Hong Kong

Well it’s time to say good bye to mum for the moment.  She enjoyed her holiday and I think it was good that she was able to help me settle in to my apartment – it was such a task to do on my own, that an extra pair of hands was very helpful.  Even just visiting the dozen or so apartments took it out of me.

So mum now returns to Hong Kong this afternoon before she makes her way back to the UK on 15th January.  Lets see when she returns back out 🙂  Hehe!
