Comedy Night at Grand Park City Hall (13th June)

Comedy Night - Line-Up

Comedy Night – Line-Up

I am always game for some laughs, so when the Comedy Club Asia website featured another comedy night set, I decided to go for it.  I arranged a group of friends to visit on Friday, 13th June event – locate at the Grand Park City Hall, so we could go straight after work…well okay, after a few drinks first.

The line-up looked okay, although I had not heard of the cast before, and I know there are always 2 good ones, and 1 mediocre ones in the line-up in most type of sessions, so I was expecting a mix bag reaction.  Unfortunately, the place itself wasn’t that packed, so we were ushered to the front row (always a mistake on a comedy event), and the jokes just kept on coming.

Getting ready for the laughs!

Getting ready for the laughs!

I actually felt bad for another member of the audience who was poked on throughout the night, as soon as you give a comedian a little of bit of fun info, they truly take advantage of us…so luckily for us, our involvement was ‘limited’ in comparison to that poor fella!

Overall, a fun end of the night, and we certainly laughed a lot!  Comedy events are such a great way to chill, relax and drink a bit – although it does help when the comedians are a bunch of funny arses too!

An Evening with John Cleese in Singapore

A few months back, it was announced that the legendary Mr John Cleese was going to visit Singapore and do a talk at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I was actually really excited to hear about this, as I always wanted to hear about his history, his upbringing, and more importantly share the laughs of the great guy that I grew up with.

The days of Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, A Fish Called Wanda and even James Bond (well not as James Bond, but in a couple of the more recent films), made feel honoured to be in a place with such a legend.

The show itself was scheduled for Sunday 4th May and Monday 5th May – and I brought 4 tickets – to share the fun and laughter with a few friends. The show tickets that we brought were $151, whilst slightly on the expensive side, I felt it was worth it (after all – it is not every day that someone like John Cleese visits Singapore!).

The show started at 8pm, and it went on for about 3 hours – it certainly was full of laughter, and it brought back the fond memories of by-gone days. One thing I didn’t know is that his family name was originally ‘Cheese‘, but he grandfather changed it to ‘Cleese’ when he went to joined the army to avoid him being picked on. That was quite amusing, and I can see why it was changed 🙂 It was such a fascinating upbringing and life story – and he certainly brought it to life. The comedy aspect all started at Cambridge University at an Amateur Theatrical club called “Footlights” – where the likes of John Cleese, Clive James, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Hugh Laurie, Peter Firth etc all were members.  Wow – what a list of stars! From there Cambridge Circus was originated, after which the Frost Report, and slowly all of this moved onto the Monty Python show. It is amazing to think that this all happened in the 1960’s and 70’s and it continued in the 1980’s. This really emphasises the good ol’ Brit humour of the days and it was fun to watch a montage of video clips throughout the night – really got the audience in stitches.

What a life this legend had – I certainly found the whole night humurous and intriguing – all in all – a sensational experience.

Comedy Club Night @ 22 Dempsey

One of the financial advisors that I had been discussing investment services with, contacted me to say that he had a number of free tickets for a comedy night – they amounted to 3 pairs (6 tickets), and I couldn’t say no to this. I invited a couple of colleagues and their partners from work, but I only had 5 people (including me) who accepted the challenge – a shame, but alas, even free is not enough to entice people sometimes!

Having gone to the Komedia Club in Brighton several times, I always wanted to find out if the was a version of this in Singapore, and I’ve just learnt that they do. There were 3 keys acts – Paco Erhard (Germany), Gina Yashere (UK), Emo Philips (US). Even the MC was pretty hilarious. The first act, Paco was very good, and a good stating act. Whilst Gina was always going to be very funny, I have seen her at the Hammersmith Apollo TV programme before, although I must add that some of her jokes were repeats, but still got the crowd going. The last one, Emo, was a total let down, he tried so hard, but I just didn’t quite get the guy or his humour, but 2 out of 3 acts was good going for a comedy event!!

But the food and drinks were just perfect :). From 7.30pm (8.30pm show start) to 11.30pm – wow…3 hours of humour….I had such a stitch by laughing soooo much. We even managed to get Gina’s autographs having purchased a recording of one of her US shows on DVD…such. A funny lady.

I must sign up and see whether it is worth doing this again soon, maybe with my own lady company next time too – we’ll see!! 🙂

Russell Peters – Notorious World Tour 2013

Russell Peters' Notorious Tour 2013

Russell Peters’ Notorious Tour 2013

The Canadian comedian Russell Peters visited Singapore as part of his global 2013 tour, and after hearing quite a lot of good things about him, I decided to get a ticket and enjoy the evening’s entertainment.

It was pretty good – the warm-up DJ sets were fantastic (DJ Spinbad and DJ SFS) – not as good as Fatboy Slim mind you or Carl Cox, but yeah pretty enjoyable listening, whilts we waited for the two comedy acts to appear.

The supporting ‘warm-up’ act was Ruben Paul who was pretty funny – he got the crowd going for about 20 minutes, and then the man himself came on stage.  The highlight of his show, for me, were Russell’s various impromptu conversations with members of the audience, mainly taking the micky out of them, whether race, religion or just for turning up late to the show (haha!)…definitely adult humour involved too.  Although, there were a few occassions this ‘links’ weren’t brilliant, and there was a few moments when he paused to try to bring it back to this material, just felt it wasn’t polished at times, but it was still a great night all in all!  It is just a shame that some members of the audience just didn’t get it, enjoy it, or understand the humour – their lost 🙂

Well I would definitely recommend going to see Russell but just be prepared on some bordering-the-line humour!
