Chinese New Year – Trip to Taiwan

Let me first start with saying Gong Xi Fa Cai or Gong Hey Fat Choy or 恭禧發財 or 恭禧发财 – in short, Happy Chinese New Year to one and all. I hope the Year of the Snake brings you years of joy, happiness, success and good fortune – I think we need quite a bit of all of this, based on the challenge environment we find outselves in.

This year, I was invited to spend time with a school friend and his wife in Southern Taiwan, so I duly accepted the invitation. I always wanted to visit him last time in 2011, but never managed to find the time to do so, so this time, I wanted to make more effort to visit them both.

This was also my first time flying Scoot, another low-cost carrier, and I must admit it’s not a bad airline. They are like the others in that ‘everything is extra’, but it was a comfortable trip.

As I was only there for 5 days, and due to the challenges to get a seat on the high-speed bullet train from Taipei to Kaohsiung, we decided that I should stay around Taipei for the first part of the day, and then head down on the 19.30 train. My mate, Sam, was kind enough to come up to meet me, as I was scheduled to arrive around 05:40, yup that’s right, with the flight duration of 4hrs 50mins, that meant my flight left 00.55 on Saturday morning – ouch! Anyway, I got some brekkie, found a cafe with free wi-fi, and just cruised until Sam arrived.

As it was Chinese New Year, most of Taipei was shut, but we walked around, chatted, stopped every so often to get a drink (to keep warm, cos it was ‘cool’ here (versus the 31°C of Singapore)). We head to Taipei-101 as we were intending to up and see a fantastic panoramic view of Taipei City, so we stopped off first at Sogo to get some food – at least we knew that this food court would be open – haha. When we arrived at Taipei-101, we entered the shopping mall on the ground floor, and it reminded me very much of Orchard Road in Singapore and the many high-end shops that exist…we breezed around and eventually went up to the fifth floor and joined the ticket line. After we got to the desk, the clerk advised us that it was quite foggy, so the view could not be guaranteed if we went up. Ahhhh…what a shame, but alas we decided to save our cash for another time to see the views. I will be back again at some point, anyway – hopefully over the summer months!! 🙂

We continued our walk around Taipei and then finally arrived at the main train station where we joined the high-speed train. It was very efficient, arriving and leaving on time, it was smooth, with VERY fast. We arrived in just over an hour, and Joy, Sam’s wife, was there to greet us both. It was a bit of a drive to where they live, as we had to go further South and around the coast tip to the South-East side. I felt very relaxed already. I was advised that most Taiwanese people would be down to the Southern parts, so I would expect it be quite busy. We had a relaxing few days, visiting some lovely scenic beaches and walks, a fantastic waterfall off the beaten track, and visited some great eating places, even visiting a night market in one of the nearby towns.

The highlight was to spend some quality time with some great friends, and also enjoy the company of their lovely dogs, Chino and Shao Bai – both were delightful, but I must admit, I had an affection to Shao Bai – she was sooo cute…hahaha!

I took the return train on Wednesday, 13th at 10.15, and arrived back in good time to pick-up my flight which was scheduled to leave at 15:45, and arrived back at 20:10 ready to go back to the office on Thursday – luckily it was just a 2-day week before the weekend – haha! 🙂

What a lovely island, a lovely Couple, their lovely dogs and a very relaxing and lovely break! It was also good to talk about some of the current challenges I am facing at the moment, so thanks to them for listening too 🙂

Chinese New Year – Taiwan

Well I heard from a school friend who is based on the south of Taiwan, and they invited me to spend Chinese New Year with them. What a treat that will be. I just need to book the flight and arrange the break with them – but I really hope it works out, as I would love to spend time with them both – some great friends! I never managed to visit them last time I was based in Singapore at the end of 2011, so I hope this time, it works out 🙂

Palau Ubin – Cycle Ride Next Weekend

Well it looks like I am going to be joining a couple of friends with a cycle tour of Pulau Ubin, a local Singaporean island which is a short ferry ride from Changi. I went there last time with mum, when we went walking around the island, but this time, it is going to be a cycle ride 🙂 Another opportunity to “keep fit” 🙂

Getting used to the local area

After a couple of weeks, I have finally settled into my local area – I’ve found the local shopping malls, the supermarkets, the wet market, the food courts.  I just need to find out a few things to do (sports, events, photography, language courses) to keep me busy.  On a serious note, I was thinking of learning Mandarin, but I think this is going to be a bit tough going – but I think I might give it a go.

Now, I just need to start booking those little side trips again – I’m keen to start exploring more of Asia – and Singapore is an ideal base.  I want to visit Indonesia, Philippines, Burma (Myanmar), Laos and more of Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.  I better get cracking – hehe.

Return to Singapore – time to settle into my apartment :)

Well, after a very relaxing trip to Hong Kong, eating, drinking, sightseeing and shopping (repeating this continously!), it was time to say goodbye to the cooler climate (that is “cooler” than Singapore – but “warmer” than the UK) and enjoy the time back in my new location.  I should really start calling Singapore my new “home” location – hehe.

Anyway, having arrived late on Friday, 28th December – the JetStar flight was quite uneventful, although slightly more turbulent than last time.  I decided to book the Hotel Re! at Pearl Hill (in Outram Park district) for the night, as I wasn’t sure I was able to pick-up the key of my new apartment on Friday from my agent.

It was nice being back at the hotel – and we had one final meal in and around China Town, before making it back to the hotel.  On Saturday, we decided to make those final purchases around China Town before returning back to the hotel to collect our luggage to go to the new Condo Apartment.  I think I’m getting there with all of the purchases – but until I move in and unpack, I really don’t know what other things I need to buy (apart from things for the kitchen and lounge area).

Going to definitely be a bit stressful for the next couple of days before I start to prepare my mind for my first day of work in the new team.

One word to remember about HK – FOOD!!!

Everything in HK is about food, food and food (maybe with a sprinkling of shopping inbetween too!) :). And yes it is in this order. After spending a few days reminiscing the good ol’ days, we end up frequenting eating establishments often. I think it is generally, eat lots and often – but just make sure you never are full full, as you don’t know when the next eating episode is (for sure, it isn’t too far away!! Haha!!)

I am definitely sure that I am putting on weight. And most of the time we have been eating feasts, which in Asian style, means great food, a nice variety and plenty of it. It really is tough going, as you can imagine.

And this is in-between the shopping to find some items for my new apartment…ranging from rice cooker, kettle and iron (all of which is actually cheaper here than in Singapore … )

Right enough writing, best get back to the eating 🙂

Eventful flight to Hong Kong

The flight out was quite “interesting”, as a fight broke out about 3 hours into the flight. I think it started because the passenger in front moved her chair back, and it hit the other passenger behind, who was sleeping forward. Well what do you expect on a cheap airline flight, where the seats pitch isn’t that much between seats. Anyway, the lady in the back threw some punches after lady in the front swore at her (in Cantonese). It was quite amusing, and the it took all 3 of the cabin crew to calm things down. Even the pilot came out at the end of the bout – and I did overhear him say FFS and that he would call the police for our arrival. The passengers were split up with the front ones moved to the back of the plane.

After things returned to normal, we arrived at HK, and we were instructed to remain in our seats whilst a dozen or so police entered the plane, and took off the 4 people involved in the facade! What a flight – talk about creating ones own flight entertainment :). Hahaha…I’ve never quite seen anything like this before.

Holiday in Hong Kong

Having now sorted out my apartment, the last thing to do was to have a relaxing holiday abroad somewhere… Having looked around at the flight and resort prices – the options of Langkawi, Bali, Phuket etc were all starting to go up in the price, so we decided to visit Hong Kong and my mum’s family this year.

The flight prices on Tiger Airways weren’t too bad – about £475 return, and at least we saved a little bit on the cost of the holiday accommodatio, by staying with our family in HK instead. We left on Tuesday, 18th with the intention to spend Christmas in HK and returning back to Singapore on Thursday, 28th December – to allow me to sort out the apartment and make the final purchases, ahead of starting work on 2nd January.

I knew my apartment activities will continue after I departed, mainly the 2-month deposit transfer and the commission payment to the agent. I did make a request for my agent to manage the transfer on 24th December in my absence and pick up the keys – the agent will also sort out all of the utilities – except the telephone/Internet, which I can do when I return. Hopefully, it all goes well.

I don’t mind what we do in HK, I know my cousin and aunt will look after us, and hopefully we will have some good food, see some sights and sounds around HK, relax and re-charge our batteries 🙂

Note: apparently…”Hong Kok” is the new Hong Kong 🙂 Must be an attempt of humour at Tiger Airlines (or just that they are illiterate!) – see photo:
